Why Married Couples Need to Have More Sex

For people who should be having sex more than anyone else, we sure don’t talk about it very often. That isn’t to say that we should be a people who “kiss and tell,” but we should be a people who are known for being celebrants of sex. After all, one of God’s very first commands to His people was “be fruitful and multiply” (Gen. 1:28). This is not the only reason though why married couples need to be having sex more often.

God Created Sex For You to Enjoy

Some think of sex strictly in terms of reproduction, but that’s not its only purpose. There is a pleasure inherent to sex that God placed there. Sex is meant to be an enjoyable and enjoyed part of marriage. There is no Bible book that makes this clearer than Song of Solomon. In it we read of the courting, marriage ceremony, and wedding night of Solomon and his bride. A majority of the book details both the husband’s and wife’s delight in each other. The purpose? To illustrate God’s plan for enjoying the sexual relationship. God created sex for those that are married, and He expects us to enjoy it.

It Protects Your Marriage From Temptation

In addition procreation and pleasure, sex is a protector against temptation. See what Paul wrote to the Corinthians:

“But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband…Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” (1 Cor. 7:2-5)

Sex is a built-in way to avoid sexual temptations like affairs and pornography addiction. Is a lack of sex a good excuse to get involved in those things? Absolutely not, though it needs to be said that many who succumb to things like pornography addiction do so oftentimes because the God-given gift of sex is not used to the fullest.

God created sex to be both pleasurable and a protection against sexual sins that would pull us away from Him. What are you waiting for? Enjoy what God has given you to enjoy!
